Cleaning the Mining Environment of Used Tyres

By Kalata News,

LUSAKA: A ZAMBIAN green economy company, Industrial Beetle, is helping the Mines and other heavy-duty companies in cleaning their environment of waste rubber and tyres.

By their nature, Mines have accumulated millions of tonnes of waste rubber and tyres which over the years they have been burying underground or heaping them in dumpsite scattered all over mining areas.

Industrial Beetle Tyre Expert, Alick Mwanza, states that the company has so far approached all the big mines including First Quantum Minerals, Barrick Gold, Mopani Copper Mines, Chilanga Cement among others.

“Our Tyre Recycling Project is helping mines clean up their environments by collecting all used tyres from their premises. These tyres are taken to the Industrial Beetle plant for recycling and transformation into other raw materials for other industries,” explains Mwanza.

According to Mwanza, the project has the following objectives:

  • To provide at a profit, an innovative and environmentally friendly way of removing and recycling waste tyres from the Mines by building a sustainable industrial recycling business
  • To provide employment opportunities for the youths in the chiefdoms surrounding the Mines operational areas and build their capacity building to recycle tyres
  • To create awareness on recycling as party of value addition in the protection of the environment from mine or industrial pollution.

Benefit to the Mines/Zambia

The Tyre Recycling Project benefits to the mines and surrounding communities through the following:

  1. Clearing of large piles of waste tyres and other industrial waste in the mining areas
  2. Safe disposal waste tyres in the mining areas
  3. Capacity building of youths and communities in recycling services and environmental management
  4. Creation of alternative employment opportunities in support of the mine’s corporate social responsibility
  5. Creation of an alternative and environmentally friendly way of disposing waste tyres and industrial waste beside back filling.

Industrial Beetle hopes companies that have stock piles of used tyres and other rubber waste will partner with Industrial Beetle to help clean the environment by recycling these industrial waste products.
